A Lazy Family Day After Travelling

Monday, February 21st – Destin, Florida Spent the morning updating the blog. Officially up to date. I’m writing about now, now which is the first time that has happened.

Aisling had a nice conversation with her Uncle Darren, Auntie Rachel and cousins. It was really nice to see my beautiful little one year old niece Izzy! Can’t wait to get back in the summer and spend some time with them. Maybe we can bring the trailer over and set it up on our way back. We also had a nice little conversation with Mary Catherine. The kids are always so excited to talk to her. We keep meaning to do video chats with more people but the time always seems to pass.

We have just had a lazy day around the campsite. The weather is nice enough to sit outside and relax. Some laundry got done. Gen organized a few areas of the trailer. It was a really nice relaxing day after moving so often. The girls set-up their tent because they wanted to sleep outside but as the day passed by and it got colder, the plan went out the window.

We needed groceries so we set-off to Walmart but along the way Gen wanted to stop in at a Goodwill to buy something for one of the kids. The kids and I waited for a while but then a quick google search revealed a play structure nearby so off we went. This is probably the best play structure we’ve seen so far on the trip. It was massive with a smaller play structure for little children, swings, a netted climbing pole nestled amongst baseball diamonds, a skate park and football field. The kids were happy.

After a while we got the call from Gen, picked her up and went to a local Publix. It was a bit expensive, overall, the groceries have been pricey on the trip. We committed to eat vegetarian as much as possible because our fridge isn’t always the coldest, meat will go bad quicker, I’ve been playing around with vegetarian recipes for a while and, of course, the health benefits so it saves quite a bit of money not buying meat. We have a ton of dried beans, rice, chickpeas and lentils and I’ve been rotating through them each week. Make a big batch of beans with our instant pot (we did bring an instant pot which has been great when we have electricity) and then store them and make different bean receipes for 4 or 5 days before switching to chickpeas. Beans and rice recipes are burrito bowls/wraps, chili, jambalaya and enchiladas.

On the way back, we drove through the town of Grayton Beach. It is a beautiful little vacation rental town with a nice beachfront. I was hoping to stop for a meal there but we never got around to it. Gen and the kids hopped out to check out the sunset while I drove around looking for parking (which I didn’t find so I peacefully read about the Raptors in the car which was a pretty good outcome).

A Desert Forest

Saturday, May 28th – Joshua Tree National Park - North to Joshua Tree National Park - South, California– Day 107 Our campsite was a large open dirt area with some scrub around the outside. In the dark we had managed to park beside the pile of horse poo and shaving. Horses were allowed in this site. Gen stepped in the middle of a pile.   The Joshua Tree National Park visitor centre was a five-minute drive away. The town of Joshua Tree was packed with college age millennials communing with nature. There was a market with kombucha, organic greens and a few small tortoises. It was all very pleasant but very busy. The laundromat was at the edge of the market, I charged the devices and did the laundry. Gen bought some produce from a guy loading a truck. I even snuck in to buy some watermelon kombucha.   The drive into the park was ten minutes followed by a ten-minute line to show our pass. A quick stop to fill up our water bottles and we were into the park. The amazing thing abo

Canyonlands is Another Planet - Pt 3

Thursday, May 12th – Moab, Utah – Day 91  Our day was shortening already, our next hike, the Grand View Overlook was closed due to a search and rescue operation. Apparently, falls and accidents happen quite a bit at National Parks; Gen looked up the top ten most dangerous parks and Canyonlands wasn’t there (it was number 12).  We got a recommendation to hike the White Rim Overlook trail, a 0.9-mile easy hike. The kids were running out of energy. They made it most of the way and then decided to stop to climb a rock. Gen and I continued the short distance to the canyon edge to see the sights. Canyon after canyon after canyon was what we saw. We stopped to sit and marvel at the scenery as the shadows started to lengthen.   On our drive back, we saw the sun set and we stopped at the visitor centre one more time to see the view from just across the road. I couldn’t get enough canyons; I was in love with the park and w

A Desert Forest - Part 4

We finally decided to move to our last destination before the sun set. The Arch Rock Nature trail was next. We reached the parking lot and saw the rocks in the distance, we were debating what we wanted to do. We just started moving and once we did, we found ourselves racing down the trail to the rocks. The kids wanted to play monster and once they started running, everyone else was running as well. We had another poo-mergency with no restroom in sight, the evidence is buried in the desert. There was more climbing on the rocks. We took pictures of the sun setting and took a quick look at the Arch rock before starting back to the car.  Gen was behind the wheel, an hour later we were leaving the park’s south entrance. We stopped at the Ranger station to freshen up in the bathroom and fill our water bottles before heading to our campsite. Luckily, the site was the overflow campsite for the park so was minutes from the outside of the park. We
