Groundhog Day... Savannah Style

Friday, March 25th – Savannah, Georgia to Charleston, South Carolina to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – Day 46

We have a book. We also have a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet was not necessarily accessible to all (a lesson for my teaching practice). So, I started a book for everyone to list what they would like to see. Mary wrote that she would like to hear about the history of Savannah, the civil war and architecture so I was pushing for a walking tour around Savannah. I thought it would meet a lot of those criteria. Gen wasn’t sure about advertising a free walking tour that also required a $2.85 tax to book the tour and the suggested $10-20 tip each for the tour. But I booked and to Savannah we go.

We were late after packing everything up. The weather was better and getting better by the moment. We found the tour guide in one of the epic Savannah squares and I dropped off the family to enjoy the tour while I found a double-parking spot for our car and trailer. I finally found parking and called Gen to find out where they were. They wanted to be picked up. The kids were walking on the monuments and not listening. Mary and Gen were done with the tour because they missed the intro and didn’t know who the tour guide was talking about. Back into the car for everyone and Gen started her own guided tour by reading information off the internet.

Mary wanted civil war history, so Gen put in a civil war monument to check out which led us back to Forsyth Park. I parked and the kids enjoyed the play structure. A quick lunch. We got back into the car, and we went to see a statue commemorating the freeing of slaves. We found our way and we ended up on River Street again. It was like we were reliving the same day again.

The next step was Charleston, a two-hour drive. Gen was excited to see the city so we put Wiley Riverfront park into the GPS and off we went. It was a nice park beside the river with a giant Pineapple fountain and plenty of flowers. Small but pleasant.

We decided to keep the walking tour going and walked to the main strip. Charleston had a small-town feel. The main strip was filled with restaurants. We walked for a while before going off the main strip to see the outside of a very nice church.
Everyone was getting hungry so Gen and family went to find a cheap restaurant while I went to get the car so it would be a little closer. No restaurant was found with the basic Genevieve criteria: reasonably priced kids meals and nothing too expensive for the adults. We started driving and Gen was consulting google to find somewhere to eat. She settled on a sandwich shop but upon closer inspection we decided against it. Luckily enough there was a Mexican restaurant next door. Kids meals were $5 and huge. I got fajitas, Gen and Mary seafood which was all very good.

After another few hours of driving to Myrtle beach. We showed up and there was someone still awake at 10pm with a campfire. We were definitely not in Florida anymore. Exciting. We set-up and I went to make friends.

They told us to watch our food because the South Carolina grizzly bear, aka the Trash Panda, aka racoons were about. I heard a noise and went to check on our food and get Gen. Everything seemed fine. They gave us some great advice on places to see in South Carolina. We hung around under the fire died out and went to bed. I brought the cooler inside at that point. Next, the attack of the South Carolina Grizzly…

Across Florida for the 5th and Final Time

Monday, March 21st – Tampa to Orlando to St. Augustin, Florida – Day 42  We are continuing our escape from Florida very slowly. We want to go up the east coast, but we are on the west coast so time to cross the State. Fortunate for us, Caley and Andrew were still in Florida at a resort, halfway between St. Augustine and Tampa, in Orlando. They invited us for a beautiful spaghetti dinner. We had some time before we had to arrive and decided to check out the trails in Little Manatee River State Park.   I think Little Manatee River was one of my favourite parks so far and I wish we had more time here. The sites were big, spread out and had grown vegetation, so you were blocked from your neighbour. It was a five-minute drive to get to the campsite, so it was in the middle of the bush which allowed a very quiet environment. The songbirds in the morning were lyrical and boisterous. It was peaceful and relaxing.   We stopped at the trails where there happened to be a p...

The Scent of Lavender

Wednesday, February 23rd – Leaving Grayton Beach to Panama City, Florida – Day 16   Packed up the trailer and got on the road. We were told that the highway 30A was beautiful so we started driving along. Before we went far, we went through towns called Seashore and Watercolour. These must have been planned and built as a group. The houses were painted in water colours, two storey beautiful little vacation rental buildings with narrow winding streets that fed the main strip. Everyone was riding bikes or golf carts around, sitting on patios have food. It looked like a beautiful place to have a summer home or retire to. We walked down the main strip for a little bit before we got back in the car. Further on 30A we went through palm tree lined avenue where it looked like the real wealth accumulated. No stops now but it was pretty pleasant to drive through.   As we drove down the coast, we entered Panama City and stopped to go to the beach for lunch and a swim. The kids g...
