Back in the car, we took the scenic drive to see the Parker Group of Sequoia’s. It’s impressive seeing so many massive trees so close together. To think they’ve been growing together for over a thousand years. We then drove through the Tunnel Log, a fallen down tree that they cut a car sized hole out of so you can drive through.
We returned to the visitor center to pick up our trailer and proceeded to the General Sherman trail, the sight to see in the park, the biggest tree in the world. We walked a short hike downhill to see the General Sherman. It is the largest tree by volume containing 1,486 cubic metres of tree. The key is the diameter of the trunk. You could see the footprint of the tree on a stone patio, and it is huge. We took many pictures and walked a bit of a trail. Mary and the girls took off up the hill early while Mom, Dad and John took our time exploring the area.
By the time we got back to the parking lot, we were running out of daylight and we were at the top of the mountain. The King’s Canyon National Park, our next destination, is next door to Sequoia National Park with the Sequoia National Forest in between. We started to drive down along the mountainous road, with a brief stop at the Lodge. The free camping options were plentiful, we were aiming for Horse Camp but on the way we found a beautiful little pull out and decided to stop. After setting up, we settled in for the night. It was a lovely sight.
