Thursday, June 9th - Santa Monica Mountains, Malibu to Sequoia National Park, California - Day 119
We woke beside Lake Kaweah, and everyone wanted to have a swim. There was a convenient road that had been flooded so it led into the lake. We walked along the road into the water and swam beside some submerged trees and picnic tables. It was nice to have a swim after sweating to get the trailer packed up.
The drive to the visitor center was quick and easy but this was just the beginning of our journey to see the world’s largest tree. Sequoias are typically found in elevations between 5000 and 7000 feet. Our drive up into the mountains on Generals Highway consisted of switchback after switchback and ended with a view of the lake we had camped beside. We finally started to travel into the forest and reached the parking lot by one grove of trees. We stopped to have lunch beside these massive Sequoias.
We ditched the trailer and travelled to Moro Point. We had taken pictures at several viewpoints but there is usually a more significant viewpoint above you. Moro Point was a gigantic rock peak that left the forest and protruded above almost everything else. We hiked up the 350 stairs to the top of the rock. Mary was concerned about the kids so close to an edge. Little did she know they’ve been living on the edge for the last month of the trip.
To be continued...
