Back to the Coast

Tuesday, June 14th - Sacramento to Big Sur State Park, California - Day 123

In the morning, we got on the road and drove along the Sacramento river which watered acres and acres of fields on all sides of us. We took a scenic drive before getting on the highway. A brief stop at Walmart and Dollar tree replenished our supplies.

We phoned Big Sur State Park to try to get a spot for the night. They had nine spots available, we were three hours away, we needed to hurry. When we finally reached the coast, we drove along a curvy cliffside road that was very beautiful. Views of waves crashing into the rocks on the coastline below were exquisite. Gen was behind the wheel. There were no passing lanes, she finally found a spot to pull off the road and subsequently had several minutes of vehicles continuing to pass us before we could get back on.

We finally reached Big Sur State Park and were welcomed with a grove of Red Woods towering over the drive into the park. Lucky us, we got the last available spot in the park (even though Gen may have said our trailer is a little shorter than it is). We were considering staying one night and pushing on but our site was available for two nights so we took both.

Our spot was beautiful; across from the washrooms with a big open space behind us for the kids to play. There was a river running through forest and a gorge a short walk away. We were going to stay at the site for a while to relax but then Gen called an audible and said let’s move now.

There was a beach nearby and the only way to access it was to look for a road with a no trailers sign. We found the sign and took the long, narrow downwards road towards Pfeiffer Beach. The beach was cold and windy but was surrounded by cliffs and rock formations jutting out of the surf. Mary went for a quick rinse while the rest of us wandered the beach with frozen feet. We ate a dinner of dal wraps while enjoying the sunset. Back to the campground for a quiet night.

A Desert Forest

Saturday, May 28th – Joshua Tree National Park - North to Joshua Tree National Park - South, California– Day 107 Our campsite was a large open dirt area with some scrub around the outside. In the dark we had managed to park beside the pile of horse poo and shaving. Horses were allowed in this site. Gen stepped in the middle of a pile.   The Joshua Tree National Park visitor centre was a five-minute drive away. The town of Joshua Tree was packed with college age millennials communing with nature. There was a market with kombucha, organic greens and a few small tortoises. It was all very pleasant but very busy. The laundromat was at the edge of the market, I charged the devices and did the laundry. Gen bought some produce from a guy loading a truck. I even snuck in to buy some watermelon kombucha.   The drive into the park was ten minutes followed by a ten-minute line to show our pass. A quick stop to fill up our water bottles and we were into the park. Th...

First Day of Online School

Tuesday, February 22nd – Grayton Beach, Florida – Day 15   We signed the girls up for online schooling and today was the first day. They were on their laptops at the crack of 9am EST (8am CST which is where we were). We have decided to have them attend class for an hour a day from 9-10am and see how it goes. It provides a bit of structure and we were tired of not yelling at them to stare at a screen. Kidding. I don’t know how it’ll work out. If it doesn’t, we will pull them from school and they will be officially home schooled.   Mary decided she was left out when she lost the opportunity to see the Goodwill so Gen and her went off to the store while I took the kids to the beach. We had a pretty good time. I’m not the biggest of beach fans but I have to get use to it because we are in Florida and everywhere is beach. We kicked around the soccer ball, hit around the baseball, the kids collected shells and played in a tidal pool near the beach. The surf was up so the k...
