The Search for Warmth - Part 1

When we left Toronto it was a balmly 0 degrees celsius which was a massive improvement over the bone chilling cold it had been for the few weeks before but one of the many goals for this trip was to seek warmth. With this in mind, we left the drive way and picked up Tim Hortons for the last time in months. The mood was hopeful, that our vehicle and/or the trailer wouldn't fall apart in the first few hundred kilometres (Note: the only other time we drove it was from Coldwater to Kleinburg when we picked it up).

The initial drive was 10 hours to Louisville, Kentucky. We wanted to get to Nashville but due to some late packing and a lot of house cleaning, a late departure left us at Louisville for the first night. This is the most exciting part, we saw our first GIANT item. I'm looking forward to the world's largest... who cares, Can of Soup, Pop can, whatever GIANT item we can drive out of our way to take a picture with. This was the Louisville GIANT baseball bat at the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum. It was epic.

Next, a quick trip to the site of the Kentucky derby - Churchill Downs. If you want to keep track at home, we have now logged 2 gift shop visits for a grand total of an hour and a half. More gift shops to come.

We reached our Harvest Host at Nashville. These are people that open up their property for RV vehicles to camp on their property. This was Fantastic Beiling farm - a farm property with al pacas, goats, ducks, doves, a donkey and more. The girls killed it in their first opportunity to milk a goat. Gen has been milked before but this was her first opportunity to milk another creature.

We went into Nashville to watch some live music and tour up and down Broadway with the colourful array of neon lights.

The night was bitterly cold but our propane furnace kept a little bit of warmth in the trailer. I did a pretty poor job of replacing our blown out windows which helped but was far from perfect. The next morning on our way out of town, we visited the replica of the Parthenon that they have in a beautiful park in east Nashville. The kids enjoyed the play structure - I think in many ways this trip is a tour of US play structures for the kids.

First Day of Online School

Tuesday, February 22nd – Grayton Beach, Florida – Day 15   We signed the girls up for online schooling and today was the first day. They were on their laptops at the crack of 9am EST (8am CST which is where we were). We have decided to have them attend class for an hour a day from 9-10am and see how it goes. It provides a bit of structure and we were tired of not yelling at them to stare at a screen. Kidding. I don’t know how it’ll work out. If it doesn’t, we will pull them from school and they will be officially home schooled.   Mary decided she was left out when she lost the opportunity to see the Goodwill so Gen and her went off to the store while I took the kids to the beach. We had a pretty good time. I’m not the biggest of beach fans but I have to get use to it because we are in Florida and everywhere is beach. We kicked around the soccer ball, hit around the baseball, the kids collected shells and played in a tidal pool near the beach. The surf was up so the k...

A Desert Forest

Saturday, May 28th – Joshua Tree National Park - North to Joshua Tree National Park - South, California– Day 107 Our campsite was a large open dirt area with some scrub around the outside. In the dark we had managed to park beside the pile of horse poo and shaving. Horses were allowed in this site. Gen stepped in the middle of a pile.   The Joshua Tree National Park visitor centre was a five-minute drive away. The town of Joshua Tree was packed with college age millennials communing with nature. There was a market with kombucha, organic greens and a few small tortoises. It was all very pleasant but very busy. The laundromat was at the edge of the market, I charged the devices and did the laundry. Gen bought some produce from a guy loading a truck. I even snuck in to buy some watermelon kombucha.   The drive into the park was ten minutes followed by a ten-minute line to show our pass. A quick stop to fill up our water bottles and we were into the park. Th...
