The Everglades - Part 4

We decided we finally needed to leave the park but on the way out we took one more of Gary’s suggestions and walked the Anhingya trail. There was some resistance in the car for another hike but I kept pressing to do it. We woke the kids up, filled the water bottles and a tired looking crew (one of the crew was actually still asleep and being carried by Dad) started the walk.

The trail was fantastic. It was a 1 km boardwalk that ran through a wetland area with a few feet of water. There was an alligator sunning itself at the side of the trail that scared the kids. Three more alligators were just below the boardwalk and the kids were fascinated. As we walked along the boardwalk we saw turtles, huge varieties of fish and tons of birds. The area was teeming with life. The perfect trail; if it was anything tougher or less beautiful, it would have been very short-lived but we walked the whole trail.

We were staying at a Harvest Host in Homestead. We arrived late and set up at a church off a busy road. They had picnic tables, a play structure (that was a little worn) and a beautiful fountain in a outdoor courtyard we had access to. We purchased seafood from a Peruvian food truck nearby, it was incredibly delicious. Gen and I stayed up charging our phones and my computer near the fountain.

Meow Wolf and O

Wednesday, May 25th –Lake Mead National Recreation Area to Las Vegas, Nevada – Day 104  We woke up in our roadside turn out and got ready for the day. Our plan was to go for a swim at Lake Mead, see the Hoover Dam and head back into Vegas. The morning was stifling hot, we were looking forward to the swim.   We drove to the visitor centre at Lake Mead Recreation Centre. We could see Lake Mead on the way. The water was well below the high-water line on the rocks. At the visitor centre we got our passport stamped, filled our water bottles, and received junior ranger booklets. The air conditioning was so nice we set up the kids to work on their booklets and hung around. The kids finished up enough activities that they were sworn in by a very nice ranger before we left.   We decided to go see the Hoover Dam first. We dropped the trailer in the parking lot. We heard it might need to be opened at the security checkpoint and we couldn’t be bothered. The H...
