Let's Go to the LIBRARY!!!

Tuesday, April 12th – Bolivar Flats to Galveston, Texas – Day 63

We woke in the morning and looked out upon the white crested waves as the salt water breeze caused the canvas in our trailer to bulge wherever the window was closed. Now that we don’t have a child sleeping on our table, we’ve been opening it up and using it. It is nice to sit around the table and eat breakfast. Oatmeal with yogurt and banana. We broke our French press when I kicked it over in Dallas so no coffee, instead Gen made Chai tea.

Gen took the kids to find shells on the beach. We have gathered a lot of shells over the course of our trip. I washed our dishes in the Ocean. The wind had picked up and a thunderstorm was forecasted. Dark clouds covered the horizon. We decided to pack up sooner than later. The bad weather never really seemed to arrive where we were. Some isolated rain drops and continual winds but nothing eventful.

Before we left, the kids picked up a bag full of garbage. It is shocking just how much garbage is left behind from previous campers. Not necessarily big stuff but small pieces of plastic.

We had another fun ride on the ferry. The wind was so strong that massive waves of spray came up when the ferry hit a big wave. We went up to the upper deck but no one went outside because of the wind. Another short ride and we were leaving to see Galveston.

Our first stop was Galveston Beach State Park to drop off and set-up the trailer. We decided to book a second night so we could stop moving for a day. The beach side of the park was closed and they were renovating the nature centre so there wasn’t a ton to do. We found our campsite and set-up. The campsite was open with a bunch of pads sitting around a communal covered area with picnic tables, and fire pits. We all had showers as we haven’t had access in a couple of days. The weather was still terrible. It was overcast, windy and drizzly.

We decided to drive back into Galveston and visit the library. The Rosenberg Library was one of the few things to see in Galveston that was inside. On the way, we went to a shopping mall and didn’t go in, then we went to a car wash but didn’t get a wash and finally proceeded to the library. Gen wanted to give our car a wash and vacuum so she dropped us off and took off. The library was nice. They had a station set-up so the kids could colour in Easter bunnies which they were very happy to do. The girls met a friend, Kathryn, who was also colouring bunnies. John wanted to use the computer, so I set him up and the girls quickly followed. They spent an hour playing video games and watching videos before Gen returned. Unfortunately, Gen had been unsuccessful finding a car wash. The car wash she did find had the power out and ate some of her quarters before she realized it.

We ended up going back to the car wash we didn’t use earlier. Gen dropped us off at a local school to play on their park while she cleaned the car. We played Monster for a while until she returned. Inevitably, as soon as Gen left, two kids had to use the washroom urgently, despite just being at the library washroom. Don’t walk behind Texas school bushes.

We had one more stop before returning to the campsite. We needed some food, so we did a Walmart shop to get some essentials.

To get back to the campsite we drove along the sea wall. There were a few people on the beach but not many. The wind was blowing and the surf was still up. It would be a nice place to visit the beach if we could get some decent weather. We went back to the campsite, ate dinner and had a pretty uneventful evening before bed.

A Desert Forest

Saturday, May 28th – Joshua Tree National Park - North to Joshua Tree National Park - South, California– Day 107 Our campsite was a large open dirt area with some scrub around the outside. In the dark we had managed to park beside the pile of horse poo and shaving. Horses were allowed in this site. Gen stepped in the middle of a pile.   The Joshua Tree National Park visitor centre was a five-minute drive away. The town of Joshua Tree was packed with college age millennials communing with nature. There was a market with kombucha, organic greens and a few small tortoises. It was all very pleasant but very busy. The laundromat was at the edge of the market, I charged the devices and did the laundry. Gen bought some produce from a guy loading a truck. I even snuck in to buy some watermelon kombucha.   The drive into the park was ten minutes followed by a ten-minute line to show our pass. A quick stop to fill up our water bottles and we were into the park. Th...

Meow Wolf and O

Wednesday, May 25th –Lake Mead National Recreation Area to Las Vegas, Nevada – Day 104  We woke up in our roadside turn out and got ready for the day. Our plan was to go for a swim at Lake Mead, see the Hoover Dam and head back into Vegas. The morning was stifling hot, we were looking forward to the swim.   We drove to the visitor centre at Lake Mead Recreation Centre. We could see Lake Mead on the way. The water was well below the high-water line on the rocks. At the visitor centre we got our passport stamped, filled our water bottles, and received junior ranger booklets. The air conditioning was so nice we set up the kids to work on their booklets and hung around. The kids finished up enough activities that they were sworn in by a very nice ranger before we left.   We decided to go see the Hoover Dam first. We dropped the trailer in the parking lot. We heard it might need to be opened at the security checkpoint and we couldn’t be bothered. The H...

Canyonlands is Another Planet - Pt 1

Thursday, May 12th – Moab, Utah – Day 91  Utah is another planet. I cannot do justice to the sights that I have seen in Canyonlands National Park. They are beyond compare. I would encourage everyone to visit. The pictures we have taken do not convey the beauty of the scenery we witnessed.   We woke up in the morning after a late night. The kids did some schoolwork. We ate our oatmeal. We tried to clean up the dust that was all over the trailer. The wind had subsided in the night and the morning was pleasant and warm. Aisling had made us promise that we would climb the rock that they had all been climbing on. We strapped on our hiking boots and started towards the rock. A quick climb later we were at the top; on the way down, we were looking for pretty rocks.  The road to Canyonlands sits between two buttes with their cliffs rising on either side. The drive was thirty minutes to the entrance. The visitor centre had displays that detailed what each layer of the canyo...
