A Rock Concert

Saturday, May 7th – Denver, Colorado – Day 86

The kids went back to the play structure first thing in the morning, The morning was absolutely beautiful, so we hung around the picnic table eating our breakfast and drinking coffee. The kids were colouring in front of the trailer so we thought we’d put the awning out. We needed to go to get junior ranger packages. We were debating putting the awning away before we went since there were a few gusts. Charlotte said we should. We drove to the park office and received junior ranger packages. By the time we got back the awning had ripped off the side of the trailer. Charlotte won’t let us live it down.

Chatfield has a beach so that means we must go for a swim. The water is winter snow melt, so it was bloody cold. Regardless, Gen and I were in. We hung out while the kids played around near the water. Knowing we needed to go, and that we didn’t want experience that cold again, we started moving.

We woke up intending to go to the Rocky Mountain National Park but at this point we realized it was a two-hour drive and too late in the day. Instead, we went back to see the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. An aside, the town of Red Rocks looks lovely, we debated stopping for lunch but pushed on. The amphitheatre was built by the Civilian Construction Corps post depression. A stage with bleacher style seating following the line of the rock up the slope. Gen wanted to see a concert. Brantley Gabriel had another show that evening and she started looking for tickets. Aisling was the only kid with enthusiasm for the idea, so it was mother – oldest daughter date night. We stayed for lunch on a patio with a lovely view and a bit of a breeze.

We decided to see the city park in Denver to find a play structure or just walk around. As we arrived at the park, we noticed a high school girl’s lacrosse game in progress. John was asleep. We turned around to watch the game. I’ve wanted to go watch women’s athletic competition throughout this trip; anything to expose the girls to women’s sport. They’ve seen men’s competitions but no women’s competition. I’ve had my eye on seeing a WNBA game in California and we almost caught a university women’s soccer game in Georgia, but anything works. The game was good; plenty of goals. Lucy could have passed more but she scored a goal as the first star.

A quick stop at Walmart to grab supplies and some secret Mothers Day supplies. We needed to get back to the campsite so Gen and Aisling could get ready for the big concert. For a treat we bought hamburgers for dinner. We haven’t cooked meat, other than eggs, in our trailer for ages. The burgers were delicious. John and Charlotte played on the play structure, and we squeezed in several games of Monster with her and her friends.

Gen loved the concert. Aisling thought it was loud. They both had ear plugs in and Aisling still covered her ears. On the bright side, she got a pretzel and a big cup of lemonade.

A Desert Forest

Saturday, May 28th – Joshua Tree National Park - North to Joshua Tree National Park - South, California– Day 107 Our campsite was a large open dirt area with some scrub around the outside. In the dark we had managed to park beside the pile of horse poo and shaving. Horses were allowed in this site. Gen stepped in the middle of a pile.   The Joshua Tree National Park visitor centre was a five-minute drive away. The town of Joshua Tree was packed with college age millennials communing with nature. There was a market with kombucha, organic greens and a few small tortoises. It was all very pleasant but very busy. The laundromat was at the edge of the market, I charged the devices and did the laundry. Gen bought some produce from a guy loading a truck. I even snuck in to buy some watermelon kombucha.   The drive into the park was ten minutes followed by a ten-minute line to show our pass. A quick stop to fill up our water bottles and we were into the park. Th...

Meow Wolf and O

Wednesday, May 25th –Lake Mead National Recreation Area to Las Vegas, Nevada – Day 104  We woke up in our roadside turn out and got ready for the day. Our plan was to go for a swim at Lake Mead, see the Hoover Dam and head back into Vegas. The morning was stifling hot, we were looking forward to the swim.   We drove to the visitor centre at Lake Mead Recreation Centre. We could see Lake Mead on the way. The water was well below the high-water line on the rocks. At the visitor centre we got our passport stamped, filled our water bottles, and received junior ranger booklets. The air conditioning was so nice we set up the kids to work on their booklets and hung around. The kids finished up enough activities that they were sworn in by a very nice ranger before we left.   We decided to go see the Hoover Dam first. We dropped the trailer in the parking lot. We heard it might need to be opened at the security checkpoint and we couldn’t be bothered. The H...

Canyonlands is Another Planet - Pt 1

Thursday, May 12th – Moab, Utah – Day 91  Utah is another planet. I cannot do justice to the sights that I have seen in Canyonlands National Park. They are beyond compare. I would encourage everyone to visit. The pictures we have taken do not convey the beauty of the scenery we witnessed.   We woke up in the morning after a late night. The kids did some schoolwork. We ate our oatmeal. We tried to clean up the dust that was all over the trailer. The wind had subsided in the night and the morning was pleasant and warm. Aisling had made us promise that we would climb the rock that they had all been climbing on. We strapped on our hiking boots and started towards the rock. A quick climb later we were at the top; on the way down, we were looking for pretty rocks.  The road to Canyonlands sits between two buttes with their cliffs rising on either side. The drive was thirty minutes to the entrance. The visitor centre had displays that detailed what each layer of the canyo...
