Saturday, June 4th –Casper’s Wilderness Regional Park, Orange County to the Angeles Mountains, Los Angeles, California - Day 114
It’s been odd going into cities after spending so much time exploring the remote parts of each state. This was our first time to go explore LA. We started by googling “best free things to do in Los Angeles”. Gen found that The Broad, an art gallery, and the Science Center were both free.
We started at The Broad in downtown Los Angeles, a contemporary art museum that was donated by Eli and Edythe Broad. The art gallery was amazing. There were quite a few of Andy Warhol’s works on the walls and other artists whose work was compelling but will remain anonymous. I’m sure the kids raise the attendants blood pressure as soon as they walk into the room.
Next door to the art museum was the Walt Disney Concert Hall. There is a second-floor terrace garden where the kids played in a rose shaped fountain. There is also a third-floor walkway to highlight the building method used to make the smooth, rounded exterior of the building.
If you ever visit Los Angeles, the Science Centre is free and amazing. One amazing aspect is the building is adjacent to the coliseum used for the 1932 and 1984 Olympics. The ecology exhibit has a two-storey aquarium with kelp, sharks and more with a tunnel to walk through it. There is an exhibit where we got to touch starfish and a sea urchin. They had a video game where you had to coax sperm towards an egg, the kids were successful as their parents were before them. Also, they had the space shuttle Endeavour delivered through the streets of Los Angeles to their door and you could see it. The centre was interesting and interactive, the kids loved it.
