Exploring Los Angeles Pt. 2

The Griffiths observatory was our destination to see the stars, but we had a few iconic places to stop at along the way. Gen wanted to see the Los Angeles River, the concrete U that was the scene of the race in Grease. We found a few bridges over the river but it wasn’t until we reached the end of a dead-end street we found a garbage strewn fenceless portion for Gen and I to take some photos of the river.

Next, I looked at top destinations in LA and Phillippe’s Original restaurant, founded in 1908, invented the beef dip. I love beef dips. The line was huge, but we ended up with three double dipped beef dips. They were delicious.

A quick stop at Trader Joes and we were waiting in a long line for parking at Griffith’s Observatory. Gen and girls got out and walked up to the observatory while I waited in traffic. We took turns taking the kids to the observatory while the other waited in traffic. They had a several telescopes set-up in the front yard to provide a very detailed view of the moon. In the observatory they had great exhibits on day and night, tides and, the coolest thing, Foucault’s Pendulum. It looks like a silly pendulum swinging back and forth but over 24 hours it rotates 360 degrees and proves that the Earth rotates. We went to look through the Observatory’s telescope, but it was closing, and it had the same magnification as the telescopes set-up on the lawn.

Finally, we drove the switch back filled, curvy road back to our campsite.

Wednesday, May 25th –Lake Mead National Recreation Area to Las Vegas, Nevada – Day 104  We woke up in our roadside turn out and got ready for the day. Our plan was to go for a swim at Lake Mead, see the Hoover Dam and head back into Vegas. The morning was stifling hot, we were looking forward to the swim.   We drove to the visitor centre at Lake Mead Recreation Centre. We could see Lake Mead on the way. The water was well below the high-water line on the rocks. At the visitor centre we got our passport stamped, filled our water bottles, and received junior ranger booklets. The air conditioning was so nice we set up the kids to work on their booklets and hung around. The kids finished up enough activities that they were sworn in by a very nice ranger before we left.   We decided to go see the Hoover Dam first. We dropped the trailer in the parking lot. We heard it might need to be opened at the security checkpoint and we couldn’t be bothered. The H...
