Our First Canadian National Park

Tuesday, June 28th – Port Alberni to Tofino to Port Alberni, British Columbia - Day 137

Our first National Park in Canada was the Pacific Rim National Park. We were excited to see how it would compare to the American system. An hour drive and we arrived at the visitor centre to purchase our national park pass. Instead of a junior ranger package, they have the explorer package. Instead of a badge, you get a dog tag with the park name on it. The explorer book was very well done.

Our first stop was into Ucluelet to visit the lighthouse and the stunning views of waves crashing into rocky shores. We ate lunch and looked out into the ocean to see any ocean life passing by. No luck. We did find very cool massive slugs that were four inches long. We walked for a few hundred metres along the Lighthouse trail before turning back to the car.

Into Pacific Rim National Park and to the rainforest trail, a 1.6 km boardwalk through lush forest. You walk over log bridges and the boardwalk takes you up and down by ferns, mosses, and massive trees. I loved this trail. We only did one of two loops of the trail, but I wish we had time for both.

To be continued...

Across Florida for the 5th and Final Time

Monday, March 21st – Tampa to Orlando to St. Augustin, Florida – Day 42  We are continuing our escape from Florida very slowly. We want to go up the east coast, but we are on the west coast so time to cross the State. Fortunate for us, Caley and Andrew were still in Florida at a resort, halfway between St. Augustine and Tampa, in Orlando. They invited us for a beautiful spaghetti dinner. We had some time before we had to arrive and decided to check out the trails in Little Manatee River State Park.   I think Little Manatee River was one of my favourite parks so far and I wish we had more time here. The sites were big, spread out and had grown vegetation, so you were blocked from your neighbour. It was a five-minute drive to get to the campsite, so it was in the middle of the bush which allowed a very quiet environment. The songbirds in the morning were lyrical and boisterous. It was peaceful and relaxing.   We stopped at the trails where there happened to be a p...

First Day of Online School

Tuesday, February 22nd – Grayton Beach, Florida – Day 15   We signed the girls up for online schooling and today was the first day. They were on their laptops at the crack of 9am EST (8am CST which is where we were). We have decided to have them attend class for an hour a day from 9-10am and see how it goes. It provides a bit of structure and we were tired of not yelling at them to stare at a screen. Kidding. I don’t know how it’ll work out. If it doesn’t, we will pull them from school and they will be officially home schooled.   Mary decided she was left out when she lost the opportunity to see the Goodwill so Gen and her went off to the store while I took the kids to the beach. We had a pretty good time. I’m not the biggest of beach fans but I have to get use to it because we are in Florida and everywhere is beach. We kicked around the soccer ball, hit around the baseball, the kids collected shells and played in a tidal pool near the beach. The surf was up so the k...
