Bison in Elk Island

Tuesday, July 12th – Edmonton to Calgary, Alberta - Day 151

We woke up in Chuck's driveway. Charles wasn't feeling that well, so he was home from work for the day. It provided another chance for us to catch up. The kids were watching tv thanks to Nat's son, Mason. Mason wasn’t doing anything, so we brought him as a tour guide for Edmonton.

Loaded up we headed for the West Edmonton Mall. Mason guided us through Legoland, the pirate ship, the indoor waterpark (complete with wave pool and water slides), the amusement park, the movie theatre with larger-than-life statues, and we stopped to watch a girl's hockey tournament on the indoor ice rink. Very cool mall to wander through. Gen stepped away to do some shopping while we were looking around.

Next, we drove to Elk Island National Park. The visitor centre was open, and they provided us with books and dog tags. They had some cool skulls and furs you could examine at an outside booth. We were told that if we unhooked our trailer to drive through the park we would be charged with illegal camping. Very strange since we often detach our trailer at other parks.

We drove through the park and managed to find a single solitary Bison eating some grass. There is a herd in the park but we didn’t see any others. We then continued to Astotin Lake Recreation area. We walked the boardwalk along the waterfront and saw a beaver swimming along. The kids played on a play structure and had a snack before we got back in the car. On our way out of the park, we spotted three more Bison on the other side of the highway fence.

We dropped Mason off with Chuck at Chuck's son Nick's baseball game. We got to catch a few innings before the game ended. We needed to start moving to Calgary. After stopping to pick up supplies, we headed for another of Jo-Ce's cousins, brother of the previous cousins we stayed with, Don. Jo-Ce had arranged for us to stay in his driveway while we explored Calgary and went to the stampede. Three hours later, we arrived and set-up in his driveway.

A Desert Forest

Saturday, May 28th – Joshua Tree National Park - North to Joshua Tree National Park - South, California– Day 107 Our campsite was a large open dirt area with some scrub around the outside. In the dark we had managed to park beside the pile of horse poo and shaving. Horses were allowed in this site. Gen stepped in the middle of a pile.   The Joshua Tree National Park visitor centre was a five-minute drive away. The town of Joshua Tree was packed with college age millennials communing with nature. There was a market with kombucha, organic greens and a few small tortoises. It was all very pleasant but very busy. The laundromat was at the edge of the market, I charged the devices and did the laundry. Gen bought some produce from a guy loading a truck. I even snuck in to buy some watermelon kombucha.   The drive into the park was ten minutes followed by a ten-minute line to show our pass. A quick stop to fill up our water bottles and we were into the park. Th...

First Day of Online School

Tuesday, February 22nd – Grayton Beach, Florida – Day 15   We signed the girls up for online schooling and today was the first day. They were on their laptops at the crack of 9am EST (8am CST which is where we were). We have decided to have them attend class for an hour a day from 9-10am and see how it goes. It provides a bit of structure and we were tired of not yelling at them to stare at a screen. Kidding. I don’t know how it’ll work out. If it doesn’t, we will pull them from school and they will be officially home schooled.   Mary decided she was left out when she lost the opportunity to see the Goodwill so Gen and her went off to the store while I took the kids to the beach. We had a pretty good time. I’m not the biggest of beach fans but I have to get use to it because we are in Florida and everywhere is beach. We kicked around the soccer ball, hit around the baseball, the kids collected shells and played in a tidal pool near the beach. The surf was up so the k...
