The drive to Crater Lake started uphill afterwards. I originally thought that Crater Lake was caused by a meteorite, I learned that it was a collapsed volcano that had filled with water. We drove up, up, up until we were surrounded by snow. The lake itself was beautiful; crystal blue surrounded by steep, rocky sides. Most trails allowed you to hike around the rim, but all trails were closed due large amounts of snow. We got junior ranger booklets and sat at viewpoints around the lake and worked through them.
After we got badges, we ate lunch by the car. Unfortunately, our car battery had died so we needed to find a boost before we started around the west side of the lake. The drive took us to two viewpoints that were partially covered by snow and gave fantastic views of the lake inside the rim and the forests covering the valley outside. It didn’t take long before we lost sight of the lake and started into the forest covered terrain below.
