Redwoods Are My Favourite

Saturday, June 18th - Willits, California to Mill Creek Falls Scenic Area, Oregon - Day 127

We woke up in a beautiful valley beside several large fields with cows in the distance. Our destination today was to see Redwoods. Our experience in Memorial County Park, camping in a grove of redwoods, was amazing and everyone was excited to see more.

We set the course for Humboldt Redwoods State Park. You can drive through the park’s 17,000 acres of old growth coast redwood forest on the 32-mile Avenue of the Giants. We had a one-hour drive to reach the park, but time was limited as we wanted to see Redwoods National Park afterwards. Time of the essence or not, we found 20 minutes to spend perusing a farm estate sale.

The Avenue of the Giants did not disappoint. The drive had pull offs so you could stop and admire the various groves of redwoods along the way. We stopped at the visitor centre which had a fantastic museum with a motor home built out of a single hollowed out redwood log. It was built in 1917 and Charles “The Nature Singer” Kellogg drove it across country to call attention to the destruction of the red woods assisting the creation of National Forests. Across the road, we had our mat down beside a fallen tree and ate tuna fish sandwiches. John and I walked a short trail after lunch to admire the trees. The quiet that descends upon you when you walk through these groves is very refreshing.

To be continued....

Wednesday, May 25th –Lake Mead National Recreation Area to Las Vegas, Nevada – Day 104  We woke up in our roadside turn out and got ready for the day. Our plan was to go for a swim at Lake Mead, see the Hoover Dam and head back into Vegas. The morning was stifling hot, we were looking forward to the swim.   We drove to the visitor centre at Lake Mead Recreation Centre. We could see Lake Mead on the way. The water was well below the high-water line on the rocks. At the visitor centre we got our passport stamped, filled our water bottles, and received junior ranger booklets. The air conditioning was so nice we set up the kids to work on their booklets and hung around. The kids finished up enough activities that they were sworn in by a very nice ranger before we left.   We decided to go see the Hoover Dam first. We dropped the trailer in the parking lot. We heard it might need to be opened at the security checkpoint and we couldn’t be bothered. The H...
